Northeastern Public Health Hosts Baby-Friendly Initiative Infant Feeding Competency Training

Northeastern Public Health (NEPH) hosted a Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) Infant Feeding Competency Train-the-Trainer Workshop in October. BFI is a global program launched by WHO and UNICEF to promote breastfeeding and improve infant and maternal health by encouraging hospitals and community health services to adopt evidence-based practices.
The workshops brought together staff and community partners from across NEPH’s vast region, from Moosonee to New Liskeard. Participants included midwives, public health nurses, community organizations, and all birthing hospitals within NEPH region. The training equipped participants with the knowledge and practical skills to deliver evidence-informed breastfeeding education and support within their own facilities. Attendees also received BFI toolkits, including structured lesson plans, activity ideas, and presentation materials, enabling them to confidently train staff in their organizations to support breastfeeding.
By developing trainers across the district, NEPH is building a network of local champions who will mentor colleagues, help identify region-specific needs, embed BFI principles, and work collaboratively to ensure consistent, evidence-based care and stronger supports for families.
Next steps include establishing a local community of practice to keep champions connected and supported; providing ongoing mentorship and resources to strengthen infant feeding supports within their own agencies; and offering training sessions in partnership with these champions. These actions will foster further collaboration across hospitals, public health, and community organizations, strengthening infant feeding support for families across Northeastern Ontario.
